SHAPE POCKETS ACCORDION BOOK – Geometric Shapes, Pattern

Students use tracers to draw 4 geometric shapes on construction paper, cut them out and glue them to make pockets on the pages of an accordion folded book they have made. Then they make lists of objects they have found in their homes that match the geometric shapes in their book, fold the lists and place them in the matching shape pockets in their books.

Supplies:

  • Crayola Construction Paper - 30.5 cm x 45.7 cm (12" x 18")
  • Crayola Scissors
  • Crayola Glue Sticks
  • Crayola Markers
  • Pencils
  • Light Weight Cardboard - 21.5 cm x 21.5 cm (8.5" x 8.5") - 1 per every 4 students
  • Copy Paper - 13.9 cm 21.5 cm (5.5" x 8.5") - 1 per student
 

Steps:

Step 1

ACCORDION FOLD THE BOOK

  1. Use a strip of construction paper 15.2 cm x 45.7 cm (6" x 18").
  2. Fold the paper in half short end to short end.
  3. Fold the top part in half back towards the fold - short end to fold end.
  4. Flip the paper over.
  5. Fold the top part in half back towards the fold - short end to fold end.
  6. Unfold the paper.

Step 2

ADD SHAPES

  1. Use tracers to draw a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle on construction paper.
  2. Cut out the shapes.
  3. Decorate the shapes and add a pattern on each one.
  4. Put glue around all but one of the outer edges on the back of each shape.
  5. Do NOT put glue on the top edge of the shape.
  6. Glue one shape to each page of the accordion book.
  7. Make sure the top of the shape is open like a pocket.

Step 3

ADD NAMES

  1. Cut out the names of each shape.
  2. Match each name with its shape.
  3. Glue the name on its shape page.

ADD LISTS

  1. Find objects around your house that match the shapes.
  2. Make a list of the objects and draw small pictures of them.
  3. Fold the lists and put them in their shape pockets.
