A country’s flag is a banner of national pride. For Scotland, the simple design of a white cross on a blue background is a tribute to St. Andrew, the country’s patron saint.
Scotland’s flag is a white cross diagonally on a blue background. The flag is known as the St. Andrew’s Cross. It has flown at least since the 12th Century, making it the oldest national flag in Europe. St. Andrew was an ancient martyr who was beloved in Scotland. He is honored every November 30 on St. Andrew’s Day. Wear this hat any day to celebrate the country’s heritage.
Cover your craft area with newspaper. With Crayola Washable Kid’s Paint, paint four big white Xs in the middle of four dark blue papers. This is the design of Scotland’s flag. Air-dry the paint.
To make the base of your hat, glue two of the flags together to fit around your head. Air-dry the glue.
Fold another paper in half to make the hat’s bill or brim. Make several snips along the open end. Fold up these tabs. Glue tabs to follow the curve inside the hat. Air-dry the glue.
Cut fringe along the sides of the brim if you like.
Cut the last flag in an oval a little larger than the top of your hat. Snip tabs around the edge. Fold and glue these tabs inside the top of the hat. Air-dry the glue.
